Quick and easy 360° timelapse with your smartphone

The Muvi X-Lapse enables you to mount your phone atop a 360° rotating head. Great for lightweight (and cheap) timelapse work

Looking to spice up your next smartphone timelapse?

The $35 Muvi X-Lapse timelapse kit could be a good solution.

The tiny unit enables you to mount your phone atop a 360° rotating head.

We put it through its paces in this video:

The lowdown

You can set the timer intervals at 15, 30, 45 or 60mins (90°, 180°, 270° or 360°, respectively) for a relatively smooth rotating timelapse.

It does have its drawbacks – the supplied mount was a little too roomy for our iPhone 6, meaning it had the tendency to move around at times.

We fixed this with a little MacGyver-like tape action, but wouldn’t expect this issue to be present straight out of the box.

Tape fixes everything. Including the mount on our Muvi X-Lapse smartphone timelapse kit

One solution is to jump onto eBay and buy a replacement spring-loaded version for less than $2.

The other challenge we found was using the Muvi X-Lapse outdoors. This is where moderate winds could rock the lightweight unit and cause jittery results.

However, if you’re looking for a timelapse kit for your smartphone that will work well indoors (and outdoors, in the right conditions), the Muvi X-Lapse is well worth considering.

Just don’t forget the tape.
